Worley Nominates Channelview High School for Build Your Future Scholarship

01/11/2021 Article

Worley is proud to have been selected by NCCER to nominate Channelview High School (CHS) for the Build Your Future Scholarship. There were several factors that led to the nomination. First, Channelview ISD was granted a bond, which included additions to their Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. CHS utilized the bond to build a new welding program during the 2019-20 school year. This new program has great potential and was sought after by students, the industry and the community.

“Receiving the Build Your Future Scholarship is a great honor for Channelview High School. This scholarship will give the welding program an opportunity to purchase additional supplies and equipment that are up to date with industry standards. The support and partnership of industry is invaluable in strengthening our CTE programs. We are grateful to NCCER/Worley for nominating Channelview High School and providing us the opportunity to help students,” shared Mia Young, M.Ed., Director of Career and Technical Education at Channelview Independent School District.

CHS is an NCCER Accredited Training and Education Facility (ATEF), sponsored by the Construction Maintenance and Education Foundation (CMEF), an affiliate of the ABC Greater Houston Chapter. This collaboration between secondary schools, industry associations and Worley is a perfect example of the practical application of our Core Value:

We are Stronger Together – We thrive in real relationships and partnerships. We nurture networks and collaboration. We recognize our differences make us stronger.

“The Channelview High School Welding Program is well deserving of the Build Your Future Scholarship. Their commitment to provide students with the right technical training is key to our industry building a sustainable workforce. Worley’s relationship with Channelview High School and NCCER is an example of collaboration that works for all stakeholders. We at Worley are honored to work with these two great organizations,” said Matthew Clark, Director – Workforce Development, Worley.

Furthermore, Worley has an on-going maintenance project in Channelview and partnering with local education entities is key to our mission to identify and recruit our next generation of craft professionals that are near our projects. In the past, students had the opportunity to be a part of the welding program, but only through our partnership with San Jacinto College’s Technical Dual Credit Program. This limited the number of students who could participate. The new CHS Welding Program has been greatly expanded to better meet industry needs locally.

In addition, Worley is supporting CHS with two craft mentors for the 2021 Industrial Craft Competition (ICC) at the Houston Livestock Rodeo (HLSR). The HLSR-ICC is planned and conducted annually by the HLSR Industrial Construction Committee made up of member contractor (employer) representatives and Texas Independent School Districts (ISDs).

Bubba Zarsky, Site Manager LyondellBasell Channelview, fully endorsed this mentoring partnership and selected two Worley supervisors from his site, Chris Nichols – Ironworking/Pipe Superintendent, and Jody Castillo – Instrumentation & Electrical Superintendent. Having the support of industry professionals working with both teachers and students will help the welding program thrive. Students will benefit from a knowledge base that professionals will provide from safety requirements to industry experiences, expectations through the training program, and guidance as they complete the program and begin the transition to industry. The students at CHS are excited and welcome any additions to enhance their learning in perfecting a craft where they one day aspire to hold gainful employment.

Finally, with the passing of the bond, a new welding shop and classroom is currently under construction at CHS and will open for the 2021 school year. This program expansion proves that CHS and the ISD are committed to providing relevant and robust training for their students that will prepare them for lucrative and fulfilling careers in our industry.
