NCCER Releases New Curricula and Assessments for the Maritime Industry

04/24/2013 Press Release

Alachua, Fla. — NCCER and the National Maritime Education Council (NMEC) announce the release of three standardized, performance-based curricula for the maritime industry. Maritime Structural Fitter Level 1Maritime Structural Fitter Level 2 and Maritime Pipefitting Level 2 are now available and include competency-based modules, case histories, step-by-step instructional outlines, trade terminology and review questions.

The programs were developed by industry subject matter experts through NCCER’s processes. The curricula and corresponding assessments provide trainees with globally portable credentials and maritime-specific knowledge to advance their careers in the industry.

In addition to these releases, the Maritime Core Assessment is now available for use in conjunction with the Maritime Industry Fundamentals curriculum that was released last year. The curriculum contains the Introduction to the Maritime Industry module and NCCER Core, including the Basic Rigging module. This introductory curriculum serves as starting point to more specific craft training programs in the industry. Completion of Core Curriculum is required to receive any Level 1 craft credential.

“The release of Maritime Structural Fitter Levels 1 and 2 and Maritime Pipefitting Level 2 are huge steps in the development of a comprehensive workforce development system for the industry,” said Mike Torrech, president and CEO of American Maritime Holdings and NMEC chairman. “We expect to see more industry partners using these curricula to develop their workforce.”

NCCER, which is recognized as the training, assessment, certification and career development standard for the construction and maintenance industries, partnered with the Gulf States Shipbuilders Consortium (GSSC) in 2012 to develop jointly-endorsed maritime construction and repair curricula and assessments. In addition, the NMEC was formed to promote industry involvement in the development, coordination and funding of the initiative. Through this partnership, NCCER, GSSC and the NMEC are currently working together to develop the third level of the maritime structural fitter program. Additional curricula to be developed include levels three and four of the maritime pipefitting program.
