Construction Superintendent Certification Program

The success of a construction project depends on the superintendent’s effectiveness in their role. Ensuring your field leaders operate at their best can significantly impact profitability, safety and client satisfaction. NCCER’s Construction Superintendent Certification Program provides comprehensive training beyond field experience. With courses in leadership, ethics, contracts, risk management and project closeout, this online, turnkey solution is designed to develop current and future superintendents efficiently and effectively.

The program addresses three key organizational objectives: construction business acumen, people management and profit maximization.

Program Benefits include:

  • Keeps your leaders in the field through flexible online training that can be fully self-paced or set up as a facilitator model—virtually or in-person
  • Shortens the learning curve and helps individuals grow into highly effective superintendents more quickly—eliminates reactive learning
  • Reduces project risk by better preparing future field leaders to handle the numerous demands of a project site
  • Provides practical, real-world lessons taught by some of the nation’s most seasoned construction superintendents and executives
  • Provides an assessment to evaluate existing superintendents and identify their strengths and weaknesses in a personalized training plan
  • Equips seasoned professionals with new strategies and knowledge for better results
  • Provides the ability to incorporate company-specific training and information into the program and allows for integration into a company’s existing program

Companies

The flexibility of this program allows you to have your employees complete it on their own or set up a cohort to go through it together. NCCER has created a facilitator guide to help, if you prefer the cohort model. This allows the group to meet on a regular basis, discuss the content, complete some included activities together and share their own experiences.

The program also offers an assessment that can be used at the end of the program or separately as a tool to evaluate your existing superintendents. It results in a certification if they meet the experience requirements and pass the assessment, but more importantly, it produces a gap analysis report that shows their strengths and weaknesses that correlates back to the training for upskilling. For those who don’t pass, this provides them with a clear training plan.

What’s Included

Each of the sixteen courses is designed to engage learners and support comprehension. An introductory course is included to provide a learner with everything they need to know to be successful. Each course includes:

  • Learning Objectives help prepare and set expectations for what learners will learn in each course.
  • Learn and Engage Lessons  provide instruction using text, audio, scenarios and videos that provide practical and actionable lessons on key topics. There is also a feature that offers additional opportunities to enhance learning.
  • Apply and Reflect Activities provide opportunities to put new learning into practice.
  • Continue Learning provides practical forms, checklists, guidelines, expert videos and links to recommended reading that helps expand the learning experience.
  • Review and Practice Questions at the end of each course help ensure comprehension of the materials and practice for taking the end-of-program assessment. The Review and practice tests can be taken as many times as an individual likes to prepare for the certification assessment.
  • How Did We Do? Each course concludes with an opportunity for you to share your thoughts and feedback about the learning experience in that course.

Certification

Participants will earn the NCCER Construction Foreman Certification upon:

  • Passing the rigorous program-level assessment
  • High school diploma plus four years of verifiable, qualified experience or Bachelor’s degree in construction management plus two years of verifiable, qualified experience

Please note that qualified experience, regardless of job title, must be from periods during which:

  • You acted as the leader and single point of responsibility for construction performance for an entire project OR a significant, defined major portion or a specific scope as a specialty contractor.
  • Your specific areas of responsibilities included safety, cost, schedule, quality, compliance, resource management, site logistics, and contract partner relationship management.

Program Overview and Facilitator Guide

For training that involves soft skills and hands-on practice, using a facilitator is an effective choice. Facilitators can provide real-time demonstrations, adjust pace based on learner needs and offer immediate answers to questions. This model promotes learning equity by standardizing training across sites and fostering collaboration and shared knowledge among participants.

If your company sets up a cohort for the program, facilitators can guide learners toward mastering the content and passing the certification exam. This program provides an overview, Facilitator guide, sample facilitator plan, learner guide and best practices for effective facilitation.

  • Enables any organization, association or training center to deliver a facilitated program supported by online learning.
  • Allows your organization to add its own content to the program or integrate into an existing program.
